When it is talked about kindness or just generally being nice, why do we always assume it is all about human to human interactions? There are other living things other than us humans, so why do we forget about the animals? Treating animals nicely and taking care of them is also an act of kindness. This is why our group visited an Animal shelter and spent the day helping out there.

It is basically a shelter for dogs who were rescued and then brought there to be healed properly. The people at the shelter treat the dogs as family, each dog has its own name and all of them are so vastly different from each other, but at the same time so friendly and full of life. How can someone not go ahead and show them some love? So, we played around with the dogs, bathed them and played some more obviously. They don’t get too many humans to come visit them every day, which is perhaps why the dogs keep coming back and refused to leave our side at the end because after all dogs and humans are best friends!

The animal shelter is called MIAR (Malaysian Independent Animal Rescue), the founder’s name is Ms. Pushparani, and the caretaker of the shelter is Mr. Elija Baskar. Miar was founded back in 2009 and was situated in Kajang, but then they shifted to Puchong, Cyberjaya 2 years ago because they were having difficulties in the environment back in Kajang. The founder is a dog lover, she always used to adopt stray dogs who were injured and kept them at her place till they healed. Then, she joined with a NGO and started the shelter. At first there were only 2 dogs at the shelter and then slowly the numbers started to grow, now there are almost 72 dogs being treated and taken care of.

To contact MIAR regarding dogs or to inform them about a new injured dog that needs rescuing, send a photo or video to them with the address, MIAR will observe the photos and videos and decide if the dog can survive with a visit to the vet or does it need special help, MIAR rescues dogs who are in very critical stage, for example dogs who has gone through some kind of accident, dogs which cannot walk properly, has skin disease or perhaps is so dirty that people refuses to even go near them.

The rescued dogs are brought to the shelter and taken care of properly depending on what type of health issues they are facing. The dogs are then put up for adoption after they have fully healed. All the expenses for the vet and everything are provided by the shelter. MIAR fights for the dog’s lives, they don’t give up on them. They follow both modern and traditional medicine for healing. The traditional healing is done in the shelter while the modern medicine is performed at the vet’s. The shelter requires public donation to run smoothly. A big budget is required for some of the surgeries, which is why donations are both important and necessary. When people come to visit the shelter, they don’t play with the dogs, they just do their work and leave. But these dogs crave human interaction, because perhaps they were mistreated at their previous home, or maybe they never even got to experience any type of loving interactions humans. Which is why the shelter wants people to come visit to specifically play with the dogs.

The people at the shelter devotes all their time and energy after these dogs, to heal them, and all they want are donations so that they can make a better living space for the dogs. So next time if you get a chance please do donate to help out such shelters.
