Reflection

I have contributed to our English Term Project via various ways. Firstly, I have summarised information that we discussed in our Whatsapp group chat and compiled and them into a single message which enables my group members to read easily. Secondly, I created a Google survey regarding Father’s Day, which was then spread to our family and friends to fill in. Next, I made sure to attend the discussions, both in campus and on the internet, so that I know the progress of our discussions. On the other hand, I made sure that the visiting date to the MIAR Animal Shelter is free so that my schedule won’t be a hindrance to our plan. Finally, I summarised the survey responses into paragraphs to show on the Father’s Day section.

There are a few challenges we faced throughout this project. Firstly, one of our international groupmate, Parisa, has to return to her hometown to celebrate Hari Raya. This caused us to have limited time as we had to plan a visit before she returns. Secondly, we initially planned to visit the Fugee School in Kuala Lumpur. However just a few days before our planned day to visit, we did not receive a reply from the organisation. Next, our third challenge is our group didn’t have sufficient time to visit other places we intended to.
To solve the first challenge, we planned for our visit to be before the Raya holidays so that all our groupmates could take part in the visit which will be a very meaningful experience. As for the second challenge, we acted according to our Plan B, which is to contact other options which we considered other than the Fugee School. Between our choices, we first contacted the MIAR Animal Shelter in Puchong, to which they replied actively. Thus our visit choice was confirmed with the animal shelter. Our last challenge was solved through adding a Random Acts of Kindness section for our project. In this section, we added all of our tiny acts of kindness in our daily lives, such as cleaning up the classroom after our classmates left. This section is to make up for the loss of other visits.

To be honest, I enjoyed this project. Through this project, I realised that kindness comes in many forms. It can be found anywhere, in any forms, no matter a small act or a big act. For example, picking up a trash from the campus grounds can be listed as kindness to the environment. Kindness is not only able to be received by only humans, but also animals, plants and our Mother Earth. From our members’ sharing of their Mother’s Day and Father’s Day photos and also the Father’s Day Survey, I have come to a conclusion that kindness starts from home. Before committing kindness to other people, we were taught by our parents to be kind to everyone. As our parents are the first human beings we come in contact with after being born, they greatly influence our personality and attitude. With their guidance, kindness is always on our minds and we would remember to be kind to our parents and other people. These type of kindness may be small, but it can actually influence a person’s life. Your ten ringgit that you donated to a beggar may be a small amount for you, but it is a reason why the beggar gets to live longer, because of the little kindness you gave which may mean the beggar gets the motivation to live or the basic necessities to live for a few days.
There are a total of three Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities (TGC) I have acquired from the Kindness Project. First of all, I have acquired thinking and problem solving skills. As mentioned above, we were unable to get a reply from the representative of the Fugee School. With the limit of time, we quickly opened a discussion to discuss about how to continue with the project. Fortunately with our backup plan, we were able to visit the MIAR Animal Shelter in place of the Fugee School. The second TGC that I have acquired through the English Term Project is interpersonal skills. I understood and assumed the leadership of our leader Isaac and assistant leader Jasmine, who were elected by the members to lead our group. Additionally, Jasmine gave us the freedom to choose which part we wanted to work on the website on a first-come-first-served basis. Lastly, I have acquired communication skills. I communicated appropriately with my group members in various settings and modes, which are discussing on Facebook group video call, around a table in Taylor’s library’s open discussion room and in our Whatsapp group chat. Everyone was sure to attend the discussions and share their opinion and respect others’ opinion.
